Overview
The Gaumukh–Tapovan Trek is one of the most powerful and spiritually enriching experiences in the Himalayas. This trail brings together adventure, devotion, and breathtaking natural beauty in equal measure.
The trek takes you to Gaumukh, the dramatic snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the sacred source of the River Ganga. As you move higher, towering Himalayan giants — Bhagirathi I, II & III, Mt. Meru, and the iconic Mt. Shivling — dominate the skyline.
Rising tall and elegant, Mt. Shivling steals the show throughout the trek. Its presence becomes clearer and more awe-inspiring with every step, until you finally stand in the vast golden meadows of Tapovan, a legendary alpine playground known for sadhus, meditators, and mountaineers.
This trek is demanding, but every challenge is rewarded with scenery that stays with you for life.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Dehradun → Gangotri (Drive)
Start early from Dehradun (around 6 AM) and enjoy a picturesque drive through Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chamba, and Uttarkashi. Follow the river-lined road to the peaceful village of Harsil, known for apple orchards and quiet mountain charm.
By evening, reach Gangotri, a sacred town beside the Bhagirathi River. Settle in, rest, and prepare for the trek ahead.
Day 2: Gangotri → Bhojwasa
Today’s trek is a gradual ascent of 2–3 hours. The trail opens into wide valley views showcasing the Bhagirathi peaks.
You’ll walk through birch (bhojpatra) forests before reaching Bhojwasa, a spacious campsite offering the best views of Mt. Shivling.
Spend the evening exploring the valley or resting at your campsite under the open sky.
Day 3: Bhojwasa → Gaumukh → Tapovan → Khada Pathar
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. After breakfast, begin your journey toward Gaumukh, crossing boulder fields and glacier moraine.
The climb becomes steeper as you approach Tapovan, but the moment you step into the meadow, the stunning face of Mt. Shivling makes every effort worth it.
Tapovan is a sacred meditation site and also a base camp for Shivling expeditions. Enjoy 360° views of Meru, Bhagirathi peaks, and the vast Gangotri glacier.
After exploring Tapovan, descend to Khada Pathar for the night.
Day 4: Tapovan → Bhojwasa (Descent)
Wake up early to watch sunrise on Mt. Shivling — a golden moment you’ll never forget.
After breakfast, retrace your steps across the moraine and descend towards Bhojwasa, taking breaks for water and rest.
Reach Bhojwasa by afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening beside the river.
Day 5: Bhojwasa → Gangotri
Your final trekking day!
The 9 km descent is gradual and takes about 4–5 hours. Refill your bottles from natural streams and enjoy your last views of the Bhagirathi massif.
