Overview
Known as Shiva’s own lake, Kedartal is one of the most stunning high-altitude glacial lakes in the Garhwal Himalayas. Sitting at an elevation of 4,750 m (15,600 ft), the lake is fed by the glaciers of some of India’s most dramatic peaks — Thalay Sagar (6,904 m), Meru (6,672 m) and Bhrigupanth (6,772 m).
From Gangotri, the trail follows the sacred Kedar Ganga, believed in ancient lore to be a divine offering from Lord Shiva to the River Bhagirathi. As you move deeper into the valley, the rugged landscapes, glacial boulder fields, birch forests, and towering mountain faces create an atmosphere that feels nothing short of magical.
Kedartal’s icy-blue waters are a sight you’ll remember forever — a pristine, mirror-like lake surrounded by colossal Himalayan giants.
The trek begins in the holy town of Gangotri, vibrant during the yatra season with temples, aartis, ashrams, and sadhus — all adding a spiritual charm before you step into the wilderness.
The best time to trek is May–June and September–October.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Dehradun → Gangotri (Drive)
Start your journey with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Gangotri. Reach by afternoon for a trek briefing and introductions. Spend the evening exploring the ancient Gangotri Temple, strolling through pine forests, visiting the local market, or chatting with sadhus near the river. Overnight stay in a guesthouse.
Day 2: Gangotri → Bhoj Kharak
Post breakfast, begin your ascent along the Kedar Ganga. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests that gradually transition into thick birch stretches.
As you approach Bhoj Kharak, you’ll see deep-purple rhododendrons and get your first glimpse of the mighty Thalay Sagar — one of the sharpest, most dramatic peaks in India.
reaching camp, you’ll cross the famous Spider Wall, a slanted rock face at about 60° requiring careful foot placement. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 3: Bhoj Kharak → Kedar Kharak
Today’s trail is adventurous and memorable. A past landslide erased a portion of the original route, so the trail now detours across loose slopes and down to the Kedar Ganga riverbed.
After crossing the streams and climbing back up, the landscape opens beautifully into Kedar Kharak — one of the most picturesque campsites in the region.
Surrounded by Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, and Jogin peaks, this valley is also known for frequent sightings of blue sheep (bharal).
Day 4: Kedar Kharak → Kedartal → Kedar Kharak
Today is the highlight of the trek. The route to Kedartal involves ascending over three rugged ridges made entirely of boulders. Cairns guide the trail.
Once you crest the final ridge, the magnificent Kedartal Lake appears — a sparkling, glacial-blue bowl set against the towering walls of Thalay Sagar.
Spend time soaking in the surreal setting, capturing photos, and resting by the lake before descending back to Kedar Kharak for the night.
Day 5: Kedar Kharak → Gangotri
Begin your descent towards Gangotri, retracing your route through the birch forests and riverbanks. The downhill walk is easier and offers a chance to relive the landscapes at a relaxed pace.
By evening, return to Gangotri for a hot meal and, if time permits, witness the beautiful Gangotri Ganga Aarti. Overnight stay in a guesthouse.
