Dayara Bugyal is often sold as “mini Switzerland”. Ignore that. What it actually is: one of the widest high meadows in Garhwal, a short 4-day itinerary, and a trek fit for first-timers who can walk 4–6 hours a day. This guide covers route, season, cost and how it compares to Kedarkantha.
Dayara Bugyal facts
| Duration | 4 days on trail (often 5 with travel) |
|---|---|
| Start village | Raithal (near Uttarkashi) |
| Max altitude | ~12,000 ft (3,657 m) on bugyal |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Typical cost | From ₹6,999 per person |
| Views | Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Gangotri range on clear days |
Why trekkers choose Dayara
The bugyal (alpine meadow) rolls for kilometres — not a single viewpoint. Oak and maple forest on the way up, shepherd huts in season, and camps with open sky. It is less hyped than Kedarkantha in winter, so shoulder seasons can feel quieter.
Because max altitude stays around 12,000 ft, altitude sickness is rare. Headaches still happen if you rush — walk your own pace.
Best time to visit
- May–June: Green meadows, pre-monsoon clarity. Good for photography.
- September–November: Post-monsoon crisp air, golden grass. Our favourite for families.
- December–February: Snow possible; colder, fewer operators. Doable with proper layers.
- July–August: Monsoon — wet trail, limited views. We generally avoid fixing batches then.
Getting to Raithal
Raithal is reached by road from Uttarkashi (~2–3 hours) or via Dehradun → Uttarkashi (~6 hours drive). From Delhi: overnight to Dehradun, then mountain taxi. Total travel can be 2 days if you are coming from far — plan buffer time.
Typical itinerary
- Raithal to first camp through forest
- Camp to Dayara Bugyal — meadow day
- Explore bugyal / optional high point, return or move camp
- Descend to Raithal, drive out
Exact camp names and distances vary by operator. Our day-wise plan is on the Dayara Bugyal trek page.
Dayara vs Kedarkantha — which first?
| Dayara Bugyal | Kedarkantha | |
|---|---|---|
| Days | 4 | 6 |
| Summit push | No sharp summit day | Yes, 3 AM winter start |
| Snow experience | Optional | Main draw Dec–Mar |
| Fitness | Lower | Moderate |
Choose Dayara for meadows and family-friendly pace. Choose Kedarkantha if you want a defined snowy summit and do not mind cold or longer travel to Sankri.
Packing essentials
- Trekking shoes with ankle support
- Rain jacket (even outside monsoon — mountain weather shifts fast)
- Warm layer for evenings at camp
- Sun hat, sunscreen, 2L water bottle
- Small medical kit including ORS
Honest drawbacks
- No “epic” summit bragging rights — some people want a peak name; Dayara is about the meadow walk.
- Road to Raithal can be rough — expect mountain taxi, not highway comfort.
- Clear views depend on weather — Bandarpoonch hides in cloud sometimes.
