Kedarkantha Trek Guide: Route, Cost, Best Time & What to Expect

If you searched “kedarkantha trek”, you probably want straight answers: how hard it is, when to go, what it costs, and whether you need experience. This guide is based on how we actually run the route from Sankri — we are based in Uttarkashi, not a Delhi call centre.

What makes Kedarkantha different

Kedarkantha is not the highest trek in Uttarakhand, but it packs a lot into six days: dense pine and maple forest, Juda Ka Talab camp, a proper summit push, and clear views of Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kala Nag), Bandarpoonch and Ranglana. The trail starts near Sankri in the Govind Pashu Vihar buffer — about 200 km of mountain driving from Dehradun.

Most people know it as a December–March snow trek. That is when the forest turns white and summit day starts before dawn with head torches. You can also trek in spring (April–May) with less snow and greener camps — fewer crowds, different light.

Best time for Kedarkantha

Fitness and experience

You do not need prior trekking experience if you are honest about fitness. You should be able to walk 5–6 hours on uphill trails with a daypack. Summit day is 4–5 hours up and 2–3 hours down from Kedarkantha base camp — often starting around 3 AM in winter for sunrise.

If you have knee problems on steep descents, train on stairs and use trekking poles. Altitude at 12,500 ft causes breathlessness for most people; serious AMS is uncommon on this route but tell your guide if headache or nausea does not improve with rest.
