Hampta Pass Trek

About this trek

The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas — a journey where landscapes shift in the blink of an eye. Hidden in the mountains of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, this trail offers a stunning contrast:

On one side lies the lush Kullu Valley, filled with forests, waterfalls, meadows, and vibrant wildflowers. On the other side lies the stark, arid world of Lahaul, with rugged mountains, open valleys, and cold desert terrain.

This makes Hampta Pass a rare experience — a trek where every day feels like a new world.

The trail follows the charming Rani Nallah for the first two days, passes through dramatic river crossings on the third, climbs to the Hampta Pass at around 4,270 m, and finally ends near the mesmerizing Chandratal Lake — known for its crystalline blue waters and peaceful ambience.

Best done between June and October, this trek comes alive with monsoon blooms, misty clouds, and occasional whiteouts that add a mystical charm to the valley.

Itinerary

Reach Manali by noon and head to Vashisht, a peaceful village known for its natural hot springs. Spend the day exploring the local temple, walking to Jogini Waterfall, or simply relaxing in the scenic surroundings. Overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Drive 30 km to Jobri, the roadhead, passing sharp bends and forested mountain roads. Begin your trek by crossing a small bridge and following the Aleo Nallah through thick conifer forests. The trail gradually opens into a beautiful meadow, leading you to Chhika (3,020 m / 9,905 ft) — your campsite for the night. A waterfall nearby adds to the charm of the location.

After breakfast, start your ascent toward Balu Ka Gera (3,600 m), also known as “Bear’s Circle,” believed to be the winter hibernation zone of Himalayan brown bears. The path moves through wildflower-filled valleys and requires an early river crossing, as water levels rise through the day. Walk along the left ridge of the valley until you reach the campsite — surrounded by sweeping mountain views.

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. Start early and climb steadily along the valley’s upper ridge. Snow bridges often appear at higher altitudes depending on the season. After a final steep push, reach Hampta Pass (4,270 m / 14,005 ft) — a dramatic saddle offering breathtaking views of both Kullu and Lahaul valleys. Descend carefully on the Lahaul side to reach Shiagoru (3,800 m / 12,470 ft) — a cold desert campsite surrounded by bare mountains.

Descend along the river and cross sections of boulder fields before entering the wide Chandra Valley. Reach Chhatru, where vehicles will be waiting. If road and weather conditions allow, drive to the magical Chandratal Lake (around 4,300 m) — famous for its moon-shaped outline and mirror-like waters. Return to the campsite near Chhatru for the night.

After breakfast, drive back to Manali via the historic Rohtang Pass. Reach Manali by afternoon, marking the end of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
